"Global Thermoelectric as we know it today was formed when a 3M representative in Calgary and a group of local businessmen in Bassano became aware that the thermoelectric division of 3M was up for sale. Together they raised the equity capital for this business, with the condition that the factory would be located in Bassano to boost the local economy. On March 09, 1975, Global Thermoelectric Power Systems Ltd. was formed and the deal was put together by the end of April, and Global began operations in May." "

(Global Thermoelectric generators have been installed in 50 countries in the oil and gas, telecom, and security and surveillance sectors, employing technology developed for NASA's Apollo program. The company was founded by a group of oil and gas entrepreneurs.)
The County of Newell has one of Alberta’s most active natural gas fields. There are roughly 30,000 wells in the County, which accounts for half of all wells in Alberta, and 37% of all wells in Canada. Approximately 170 production and service companies employ 4,000 to 5,000 people in the energy sector in the region.

The sector continues to grow in the region, generating associated service and secondary energy industrial (including alternative energy) opportunities that tap local labour force skill sets. It's common, for example, for a farm operation to also have an oilfield service business. There is also potential to tap oilfield services skill sets in niche areas including but not limited to fabrication.

All the major players in the oil and gas sector have operations in the County of Newell. Cenovus Energy is the largest single employer in the energy sector in the County.
