The Crop Diversification Centre South (CDCS), operated by the Province of Alberta, has been instrumental in research that has developed several varieties of crops for production in all areas of the Province of Alberta, and across Canada. The CDCS conducts research into crops including but not limited to greenhouse vegetables, potatoes, and pulses. In 2010, a new state-of-the-art greenhouse will open. This facility will have one acre of pre-production greenhouse as well as nine separately controlled greenhouse bays that will meet the needs of CDCS researchers. Crop protection is a strong component of the work undertaken at the Centre, with research focusing on plant diseases, insect pests, and weeds.
A public attraction at the Centre is the rose garden, open for public viewing. Over 50 varieties of hardy roses are grown in the garden, many of which are one-of-a-kind. Pathways through the Golden Prarie Arboretum will lead past a variety of trees suitable for prarie gardens. A picnic shelter is available.
